#31dc2014 Day 20: Water Marble

OMG! I did it. I water marbled and I didn't even cry once! These nails are inspired by the fabulous @lilyandjinks. She did a kitty version and they are ridiculously awesome. I am digging the super fly ducklings!

Polish:

  • Barry M - Bright Purple
  • China Glaze - Wait and Sea
  • OPI - Angel with a lead foot

I fully appreciate the skill involved in water marbling and it looks unique and beautiful but gosh it is so messy, I always end up with polish all over myself. It's far from perfect but I am very satisfied with this year's water marble. And to get to the end of it with no tears...BONUS! xx

#31dc2013 - Day 20: Watermarble

So today is the day....its time for the dreaded water marble. I say dreaded because there only seems to be 2 outcomes when trying to marble: it either works or its a complete disaster/epic fail! After an hour of trying to find polishes that worked well together in the water, I then spent another half an hour trying to find a pattern that I liked and was a bit different from the normal "flower" design. And this is the result. The art deco water marble.

Today's design features:

  • BC- Shade 8 (peach)
  • Gloss n' Sparkle - Spectraflair topcoat
  • Color Club - Beyond (Black Holo)

I breathed a huge sigh of relief when this mani was finished. Jules will tell you...there was raging and swearing and Drama Queen meltdowns. But it was worth it in the end, they came out so beautiful and I'm proud of myself....and they are sparkly, winning! Until tomorrow..........

10000k Celebration Water Marble

In March of 2012 a friend of mine said to me that if I was really serious about getting into nail art then I just had to get an Instagram account. Apparently you could loose yourself for hours trolling through the stunning nail art pictures and following the moves of your favourite artists with a filtered view of their everyday lives. I quickly became addicted but Instragram has become more than just another social media platform. I have been fortunate to meet many like minded girls who also share a love of being creative and obsessing over nail polish. And its for all my IG friends that I braved the dreaded water marble. To our 10000 followers, thank you so so much for your support, encouragement and inspiration.

The jade green is BC 19 - a cheap polish from Kmart. The coloured glitter is Gloss n Sparkle - Unicorn droppings. To create the water marble I used Gloss n Sparkle Spectraflair Topcoat and BC 19 and the white is OPI - My Boyfriend Scales Walls.

This type of water marble design is a good one for beginners to try. You don't need to get all your drag lines super precise like you would in a flower or star marble design . Now I am far from an expert at water marbling but here are a few things that I do that may work for you.

  • Room temperature filtered water
  • Runny new polishes preferably from the same collection if you want to add multiple colours
  • China Glaze is really hard to marble with!
  • Use a plastic or glass cup not polystyrene - if you drop the polish too forcefully into the water and it sinks to the bottom it will eat a hole in the polystyrene cup and then you will have a flood. Disaster!
  • Have paper towel nearby to wipe off your orange stick or toothpick.

To begin the marble I started with 2 drops of Spectraflair Topcoat. It spread perfectly in the water, right out to the edges of the cup. Then I continued by adding 1 drop of BC 19, then one drop of Spectraflair, then BC 19, back and forth until I had 7 layers like in the picture above. You can continue to build more layers to increase the surface area of the design but as I was only going to do one nail I just needed a small patch of design so I kept my bullseye small.

The next step is to take your orange stick or toothpick and draw from the centre of your bullseye up to the top of the cup, then again from the centre down to bottom of the cup. Keep wiping off your stick as needed so it doesn't get too gluggy. This will anchor your design to the cup and keep it from getting ruined as your draw your horizontal lines. This is super important, anchor the design to the cup  by gently dragging the polish from the edge of the bullseye so it touches the cup in a least 2 places before you move on. See the big green blob at the top of the cup, thats where I anchored my bullseye.

Now take your stick and draw horizontally from side to side. The key here is to start dragging from a centimetre away from the edge of the cup, the polish wont be dry there like it is nearer to the edge. This will stop your design from ripping apart too. I anchor each line at the opposite end when I drag it.

To avoid a horrid clean up tape up your fingers. This type of design wasn't too hard to clean up but it you are using dark colours...use tape!

I never could have imagined that in just over a year we would have 10000 people followingour nail adventures on IG. We love reading your comments and we try to answer as many of your questions as we can. If you haven't delved into the world of #nailart on IG prepare to have hours of your life vanish as you ohh and ahh over the amazing creations. OPI Black Spotted

In 2012 when OPI released their Spiderman collection they teased us Aussie girls with a speciality polish called Black Spotted. Described as as oil meets water effect, this limited edition polish was only released in France which sent us nail crazies into a spin trying to figure out how to get our hands on it. It was almost as hard to get as trying to get a decent picture of this mani!

Black Spotted is a really watery polish that you apply over regular nail polish to create a spotty, oily effect. You have to make sure your base colour is dry and I mean dry before you apply it or it cracks and ruins the bubbly look. I found adding a layer of Seche before the Black Spotted sped up this process however did make it a little harder to apply so that the spots didn't drag and turn into lines instead of bubbles. You need to apply it delicately and try not to overlap as it floods itself and you loose bubbles and end up with a black blob. Once I figured out how to apply it to get maximum effect it was quick and easy to use. It dried really quickly and didn't smudge when I applied top coat.

Black Spotted is available online from a variety of esellers however its not cheap. You can recreate this effect by dripping one drop of polish into a shot glass then spraying it with hairspray or alcohol spray, however it rarely comes out as good as Black Spotted and its a lot harder to clean up. So is it worth the price? I say yes, I love the effect, its easy to use and because you have to apply it in thin stokes you hardly use any polish so it should last a long time. I'm glad I have it in my collection.

I layered Black Spotted over China Glaze - Flip, Flop, Fantasy which is a neon coral creme from the 2011 Poolside collection. We have this colour at the markets if you like it. So will you be searching out the elusive Black Spotted for your collection?

Marbling with Cirque de Soleil

Today was "muck around with some of your untrieds" day, and shamefully there are many untrieds in my collection. They are all sitting on my desk waiting for their day in the sun. Well today I managed to pack 3 un-tried polishes into one manicure. The blue in the water marble really stole the show for me in this mani, its such a devine colour and the way it swirled together with the purple, its like an organic neon abstract animal print thing......ok I'm stopping, Ive been watching way too many episodes of Project Runway.

Blue: China Glaze - Hanging in the Balance
Purple: China Glaze - Creative Fantasy
Pink - China Glaze - Escaping Reality

I painted the accent nail with one coat of Kleancolour - White. Then I mixed 2 drops of blue, 2 drops of purple and one of the pink polish into the water in a bullseye pattern. The pink wanted to take over when I did just one drop of each, it was super runny and kind of bled into the blue and purple, hence why I added 2 drops of those each time. I did it in a shot glass to try and save polish but don't think I will do this again, its hard to manoeuvre your finger over where the best part of the marble is in the water and its easy to bump your nail while it's still in the water and you are removing the extra polish. I wish the pink would have come out a little more vibrant in the marble but it still looks really nice. This pink is a little pinker and less orangey in real life. The afternoon sun has given it a slight orange tint.

China Glaze - Escaping Reality

China Glaze Cirque de Soleil collection (minus the red and black glitter, I didn't get that one as the reviews from other bloggers turned me off, apparently the formula was a bit dodgy and red and black is not a combo I would normally gravitate to anyway). Click here for an earlier post devoted to this collection.

Aussie Christmas Challenge Day 7: Aussie Sunset

You're looking so hot today Rhonda......like a sunrise! (Aussie joke). So here we are on day 7 of the ACC. I love gradients and there is nothing more beautiful as the colours that melt together in the sky as the sun is setting.

For the gradient I used:
  • Zoya Pippa - banana yellow creme
  • China Glaze Japanese Koi (neon) - dark orange neon creme
  • China Glaze Love's a Beach - hot pink neon shimmer
For the water marble I used:
  • China Glaze Japanese Koi (neon) - dark orange neon creme
  • China Glaze Love's a Beach - hot pink neon shimmer
  • Zoya Yummy - a sky blue creme
  • China Glaze Sun Kissed - a neon yellow shimmer
I have added my gradient tutorial in for everyone as I used this method for this design just added another line of colour.
